Equipment as important as your eye for art. And not forgetting ... ... Photoshop is important too.
At this moment, I have my camera, the D40 with only the 18mm to 55mm lens, coupled with some cheap investments: a monopod and a tripod from Walmart, and a 5-in-1 reflector. So I am a little under-equiped. Yet, I am stubbornly persisting. I need to master my D40 first. I need to be able to set my camera properly: 4 main areas: ISO, White Balance, then f-stop and shutter speed. So far, my main problem area is the White Balance. And I stop short of going out to buy that costly Expo disc. Duh ... ... No point if I don't remember that I got to set it by taking picture of something white first. So go and take a picture of something white before you take the real pictures at every setting! I got to remember that.
My eye - look into the viewfinder! See from the viewfinder. Compose in the viewfinder. If you get what I mean ... ... and well ... ... beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.
So far I have absolutely not resort to Photoshop to make any of my photos better. I shoot in FINE jpeg mode. Let's delay the RAW material management in Photoshop to later. It takes too much time because I love to take a lot of photos. I have not yet purchased the software. I will. Its coming. But first, learn the camera and compose the picture ... ...
